En 1858, entre las 107 obras expuestas por los alumnos de la Escuela de Dibujo y Pintura, dirigida por Antonio José Carranza, sobresalió un óleo suyo, La concepción (El Foro, 24 de diciembre de 1858) y en 1860 participó entre las obras de pintura, según refiere Pedro José Rojas en la prensa, con una cabeza de expresión filosófica muy bien desempeñada (El Independiente, 3 de noviembre de 1860).
