Anzoátegui), donde desarrolla actividades comunitarias junto a Gladys Meneses. Tras su retorno de Japón pierde el gusto por el detalle, abandona el arabesco, aprovecha las vetas y el color propio de la madera aunque también agrega color para discriminar los planos. En 1975 interviene en una colectiva de arte venezolano en la Universidad de Nebraska (Lincoln, Nebraska, Estados Unidos), organizada por el Conac, y en 1978 participa en una colectiva en Barcelona (Edo. Anzoátegui) en memoria del pintor Rafael Rosales en la Galería Municipal de Arte Moderno. Para ese entonces realizaba obras de gran depuración visual, como Madera mariposo (1979, colección GAN), en las que tallaba, pulía y pintaba la madera para resaltar las formas. En 1982 representa a Venezuela en la Bienal de Medellín (Colombia) y, al año siguiente, en la Bienal de São Paulo. En 1986 asiste al Primer Simposio de Escultura de Iberoamérica en Santo Domingo. Igualmente lo hace en la II Bienal de Arte de La Habana (1986 y 1989). Desde 1985 trabaja con preferencia la madera. Entre 1989 y 1990 trabaja piezas en mármol; en 1991 trabaja en Carrara (Italia) y al año siguiente participa en la Feria Internacional de Tokio. En 1996, Tecnocolor edita un libro sobre su obra, con textos de Carlos Silva. En 1997 recibió el Premio Arturo Michelena con Penacho (Ateneo de Valencia, Edo. Carabobo, 1997), obra reconocida por "el hallazgo pleno de sencillez y de la vitalidad de lo orgánico" (Oropeza, 1997). Este material le ha permitido desarrollar un diálogo coherente entre forma y pensamiento, sin dejar de lado un halo latente de vida: sus esculturas, aunque abstractas, muestran insistentemente objetos y seres cargados de aquello que, en algún momento, corrió como savia por la madera. "En la obra de Pedro Barreto es constante una voluntad de orden, de equilibrio y armonía intensificada siempre por la riqueza expresiva de sus materiales que con tanto amor y maestría domina" (Calzadilla y Briceño, op. cit.).
